chilly hilly pre ride

We took on Bainbridge Island this weekend so we can get a feel for Chilly Hilly. This has got to be the most work I've put into a bike ride in a long long time.

See that hill at the beginning? That isn't officially on the Chilly Hilly route. I didn't really know the route and just went for it, and as I turned the corner, the route guide that dieter printed out for me fell out of my pocket (1st of many times this ride), and I was half way up the hill by the time I noticed. We rode up to the top until we passed Valley and realized that Valley wasn't supposed to come up as a turn for several more miles, so we turned back and took the correct turn at the bottom of the hill. My bad guys, but I'm not that sorry. I'm pretty sure this is going to be a new favorite route for this summer. Sorry Mercer, you've been replaced. Below are other ride maps/information. ~36 miles not including commute to the ferry from Udistrict(me)/Tacoma(otherdudes)

Le Tour de Gig Harbor

I threw Fox Island in there for you Deetr. Let me know what you guys think. But I'm not changing anything. ;)

because i'm in a thesis writers block...

guh... what happened... we did this last week?

i liked this ride a LOT. i'm a big hill climber, that could be why. we also came upon our most formidable hill yet. i marked it with the hors category marker.

oh. and i mapped it.

so yeah, 20% grade, that sucked. keeg and i just started to power up it and by the time we got most of the way up (about where the HC marker is) we were sucking air so bad that we had to stop. alex got really pissed off at us about that hill (i still secretly like it).

further on the route there's an area on Banner Rd. that is supposed to be fairly flat, but as keeg and i came up on it the slope kept getting steeper. i was on my brakes the whole time maxing out at 38mph because i didn't want to hit keeg if he spilled going down it, but going up the other side i think it's well established that we will be able to handle the rolling hills of chilly hilly, as long as we choose our pace correctly.

i've been doing intervals on my trainer at the ends of my bi-weekly workouts, which is supposed to lead to something about better VO2... something... i think what it leads me to do more though is sprint down hills as i set my new max speed of 42mph.

the ride concluded with a few short climbs, mad props to dick for passing up keegan on the last climbs and coming in second (something i didn't really expect, dick was a good length back in the last 5 miles). mad props also to alex for doing this ride on his first ride since stp last year, my condolences to his ass, knees and legs.

normal props to keeg.

Commute Home

Here is my ride home from Renton. I got a little lost in the beginning (thanks a lot google maps...) but it all turned out alright.

The interurban trail is awesome! Away from roads, a nice wide trail, nature on both sides most of the way. About 12 miles with almost no stops. Sweet.

Everything was going good until I got off the Interurban. Jovita blvd has ZERO shoulder and is a windy, uphill, busy road. On the plus side, I powered up about 200 feet of elevation without even thinking because my mind was focused on not dying.

I made it up my hill at the end with minimal problems. I didn't get off the bike the whole time up which I was proud of. I did some serious out of the saddle work...

Anyways, it took me about 2.5 hours and my bicyclotrometer told me that I went 31.78 miles which is roughly -1 boner miles :/

If Deetr would EVER post our Saterday ride then I could total my miles for this week ;)

Keegan and Jamie: Supplementary

Let me start off by saying, "Do NOT try to repeat this ride!" It is much to extreme for all you novice bikers reading out there.

So today I started off the day by getting my whip tuned up and ready to tackle the Tacoma hill before mentioned in Deetr's post. It was only a $15 dollar fix as my derailer needed to be realigned and my gear wire tightened. I haven't tried it out on the hill yet but here is what we did do:

As you can see it was a grueling 3 miles. The elevation gain is posted below, if you dare to look. The weather was tumultuous, with the sun beating down on us constantly and the temperature at an amazing 60 degrees.

If you can believe it, we also returned home on the same route, only stopping once to receive moral support at Jamie's Nana's house.

In other news, it is Jamie's birthday tomorrow and we stopped at Old Town to pick her up a new helmet! I also got a helmet and picked up four spare tires after my flat on Sat. While we were at Old Town, I realized we were in the 'Old Town District' and finally put two and two together that this was probably where Old Town Bicycle was started.

A good day!

the dieter and keegan addendum

so as dick said, keegan and i did a bit more biking to warm ourselves up (and get to seattle). however, this plan backfired as we just became more cold and loathed leaving any indoors area, or heated bus. what follows is the extra riding keegan and i did.

the first leg is his house to the bus:

i know what you're saying right now, "holy downhill balls dieter! i've never seen 12% on a downhill elevation graph before!" it was kind of scary. mainly because the morning slick was still on the road (it was about 8am), and that there were stoplights almost every block we had to stop for. anyhow, no ascent to speak of, it was cold.

after we got on the blissfully warm bus, we rode it as far as you could for $3. then rode to dick's place:

this was apparently something like keegan's commute he said. it's pretty close to right, though wrong, because i didn't really know where we were (i tend to stay off the burke gilman, and bridges). notable ascent of around 270ft.

after our cold, yet entertaining journey in which we saw plenty of group rides involving middle to elderly riders, and brainstormed the adornments of our dream home on mercer island (pointing out neat houses is a tradition on this ride, but we ended up unclear on where the ram is w/relation to the bear at this point), we ate some chipotle and watched some 30 rock, some bear grylls and then headed out for the bus.

this is my "commute" (from dicks place to the bus). mainly flat. notable ascent around 213ft.

after a bonk filled bus ride, keegan and i arrived in tacoma as it was getting dark, but we tried getting off the bus somewhere closer to his house and planned to go by the spaghetti factory road in an effort to avoid the 12% grade we saw earlier:

as you can see that wasn't successful. in fact we found an entirely new 14% grade by shortening our ride by almost 0.7miles! this is an amazing climb with a few plateaus and stoplights scattered throughout it, but it's approximately a 322ft climb over 1/4 of a mile. keegan had to stop several times during a climb because his bike was "shifting on its own" while climbing (but seriously, it does).

it's hills like these that we'll need to be able to tackle if we're planning to do hpc (high pass challenge) this year. while this hill if more difficult than any hill we'll face in the upcoming chilly hilly, it bears mentioning now that two weeks into training, i'm pretty confident that we'll be able to handle it by the time it comes up in february (course and elevation chart follow for reference).

it should be noted that mapmyride's elevation chart shows around 1200 ft of ascent, while cascade's reports around 2800.

however it would appear that baker hill is a meager 8.5% grade, while 19th is a brilliant 14%. we'll investigate this ourselves in two weeks.

second ride: back to the old routes

The guys came up to Seattle and braved the 40 degree weather (it was 37 when we left but 44 when we got back). We took off from Udistrict and rode the Mercer Island loop. I think my legs are FINALLY starting to come back. I broke my ankle in november and have just recently started riding my bike again. This training season is going to be intense.

Here is the route stuff.
33.98 miles (although dieter and keegan biked to the bus in tacoma and from the bus stop in seattle to udistrict so they may be more like 40-45 miles total)

first ride, 2010

Hey all, first post of the new year, following the first ride of the new year.

We're planning beyond finishing stp in one day this year, since we've already managed that (during the hiatus of the blerg). But more on that later. This year we've picked up a new rider, and we went on the first ride of the year in the old GH. It was relatively short, but also relatively grueling.

And the elevation profile...

The ascent was a meager approximately 1000 ft. We finished somewhere around 1:40:00, hard to tell actually because my magnet for my cyclometer got un-stuck at some point after 1:11:00 on the return trip. The reward for this ride was Kinza, which is the stop we made before the second trip on Soundview (going down).

I'm still riding my Allez, with no real changes from last year, Dick his Novara.

Next week we'll be doing Mercer Island. With a suitcase of sausage.
